This is a collaboration between myself and $chix0r which started with me doodling the head over about an hours worth of painting one day a couple of weeks back. I'd been practicing my brushing skills and trying to make some much softer lines than I normally produce. I added some of the detailing around the eye and mouth and roughly coloured it to give depth. I then thought nothing more about it until Fiona and I were chatting one day about unfinished work we both had. I showed her the sketch and she immediately wanted to do something with it. I showed her some examples of her work that I liked and asked her to do something based on those.
A couple of weeks went by until she sent me back a preview of what she'd been messing with and I totally loved it. We swapped photoshop files and I put the finishing touches to the piece and here we are! A finished collab! w00t!
We are both super happy with the results and the title seemed to fit perfectly. The fact it's a Porcupine Tree song probably won't surprise anyone much LOL
It doesn't have to say anything, it doesn't have to convey anything, it does not have to contain a message. It can simply exist for no other reason than to bring pleasure to the senses of the viewer.
Ancient man crawled into a cave and drew the world around him, and made his mark for it's own sake. Artists have tradionally painted that which inspired them, or what they saw around them, or for no other reason than that it gave them pleasure. The inherent 'message' of a piece is a modernism, and it's....tedious!
I like this piece of work, it gave me pleasure to look at it. That in itself is sufficent.
When I first looked at this deviation, I immediately recognized the influences from $chix0r in it. I think I said as much in my original comment. Fiona has a clear affinity for organic vector shapes and earth tones, and to that degree she's branded her work pretty well. Now, my only major gripe about this image is that it feels so much like art for art's sake. To me it's not outright saying anything. OH LOOK I'M DONE!
Beautiful. I agree with Illusio~5. It doesn't have to say anything. An empathy with a piece comes and that is enough.
Feeling doesn't have to be given a word, a definition, a box to put it neatly away in.
It is the viewers responsibility to bring themselves to engage with a work of art and enter into an exchange, to allow what meaning they find to surface.
Wow, I love alot of your drawings, and when I saw the Porcupine Tree song as the name, I had to check this one out. It´s really awesome, I really liked it. And Porcupine Tree is my favorite band. So thanks alot for this n.n
