how does ppi come into it? ppi is for print

ppi is the resolution. A lower resolution will load faster and take up less memory as a wallpaper, i'm assuming that is why they want it to be 100ppi :)

Yes, but ppi (pixels per inch) only applies to printing on paper. It doesn't apply to monitors. If it was applied to monitors, it would be essentially meaningless because the amount of pixels per inch is determined by each user's monitor and what resolution they set it to. For example, if I make a 800x600 wallpaper, and you display it on a 1152x864, it will have a high ppi. But if you change your resolution to 1024x768, everything on your screen, including my wallpaper, will now have a lower ppi - it has nothing to do with what size I have made the wallpaper. Do you see what I mean?

I see what you mean I think. But it doesn't really matter. They want the resolution of the wallpaper set to 100ppi, so that's what I did for mine when I created them. You can do what you want.

You mean you set it to 100ppi in Photoshop? All that means is that if you print it, the file will tell the printer to print it at 100ppi (and it will look crap and pixellated, indicidentally - 240ppi or higher is preferred for print). It won't actually make any difference to your wallpaper. Even if you made it 900,000ppi it would still look exactly on the screen. What is important is the screen resolution (in this case, no smaller than 800x600px, and no larger than 1600x1200px)

Like I said, I just followed the directions they gave. You do whatever you wish. I don't plan on printing it out, so it really doesn't matter, Does it?

Could we have the logos supplied in a format that supports transparancy? Or are we supposed to be limited to using a white background?

I don't have photoshop. GIMP won't read them. For a freeware based competition I find this disappointing.

is it ok to slightly modify the logo (ie. use it as plain white on a dark background for clarity, add shdows, etc.) I have already done some of this on my entries and been concerned about it been all allowed, but just thought I'd confirm. Nothing drasic, just simple things to make it fit in better with the artwork. Is that allowed?

thanks,

oli

Say, I was thinking... do you need to use the logos that say 'linspire' or the logos that say 'freespire'? It's all rather confusing.
